With the approach of Tropical Storm Hanna, in accordance with the State and County Operations Plans, a VOLUNTARY EVACUATION is in effect for the portions of Georgetown County east of Business Hwy. 17. Additionally, those in low lying areas and mobile homes throughout the County are encouraged to consider evacuating at this time.

The shelter at Pleasant Hill Elementary School (127 Schoolhouse Drive) will open at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, 9/04/08. Buses will pick-up those needing transportation to the shelter at designated pick-up points from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. this evening, 9/04/08 and from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) morning. Pick-up points are:

Georgetown County Schools will be closed Friday, 9/05/08. With the exception of mission essential personnel, School District Offices will be closed as well.

Advisories warn us of impending danger from severe weather.  Here are the specific advisories to note during hurricane season.

•  Tropical Storm Watch:  Wind speeds of 39-73 mph are expected within 36 hours.

•  Tropical Storm Warning:  Wind speeds of 39-73 mph are expected within 24 hours.

•  Hurricane Watch:  Wind speeds of 74 mph or higher are expected within 36 hours.

•  Hurricane Warning:  Wind speeds of 74 mph or higher are expected within 24 hours.

•  Evacuation order:  An order issued by the local government advising everyone in the area to evacuate.  Once the order is issued, immediate evacuation is required by state law.

•  Evacuees from Garden City Beach southward to Georgetown will take US 17 south through Georgetown.  They will then take US 521 to SC 261 to US 378  to Columbia.  Alternatively, they may take US 17 south to US 701 in Georgetown to SC 51 to US 378 at Kingsburg.
